If there’s one thing that is absolutely true about Telluride, that is that it is a tiny town. It has always been a tiny town, and (thankfully) it will remain a tiny town. This is largely due to the geographical constraints of Telluride’s location, nestled in a narrow box canyon at the base of towering 13 & 14 thousand foot peaks. It is also due to the fact that in 2007, the town of Telluride voted to protect the valley floor from development. What could have been golf courses & hotels, remains (again, thankfully) majestically beautiful open space with elk herds grazing during the summer months, and cross country skiers gliding gracefully during the winter months. We have one of the most stunning locations of any mountain town in the world.
Choosing the right location in Telluride for your vacation is not as stressful as many first timers think. Really, everything in town is within easy walking distance. You will never be walking more than 10 minutes at a leisurely pace to access the gondola, Colorado Avenue or Lift 7. Here at Lodging In Telluride, we manage a selection of vacation rentals condos that are dotted around town. I would like to help you decipher which condo complex is right for you, depending on the nature of your visit. I will also outline some of the amenities of each complex which may affect your decision on where to stay.
The Viking Lodge
The Viking Lodge is where Lodging In Telluride had it’s humble beginnings! This complex sits directly on the Telluride River Trail, and the condos here have gorgeous views of the river & the surrounding San Juan Mountains. Sitting on the junction of W. Pacific Ave & S. Davis St, the Viking Lodge offers guests on site parking, a heated pool, hot tub & a laundry facility. During the winter months, the Lift 7 precinct is right across the river, about 3 minutes walk away. For summer festival goers, Telluride Town Park can be accessed by taking a serene stroll along the San Miguel River. This walk takes about 10 minutes. Or, for a faster route, you can take a straight shot down Pacific Ave & be at the festival gates in about 6-7 minutes. We manage about 12 condos at the Viking Lodge, most of them being one bedroom accommodations that can sleep 4-5 guests. These are some of the best value rentals in town due to their size, proximity to all of the action & amenities of the Viking Lodge.
The Boomerang Lodge is located not far from the Viking Lodge in Telluride, on S. Tomboy Drive. The Boomerang Lodge is a smaller complex, with about 10-15 condos in total. The Boomerang Lodge has undercover parking (one vehicle per unit) which is a wonderful advantage during the cold, snowy winter months. No early morning ice scraping sessions required! What I love about the Boomerang Lodge is the communal reception area. It’s like a giant living room with vaulted ceilings, a lounge area, a long table & a gas fireplace. This expansive, yet cosy lobby area is perfect for socializing & gathering. From the lobby you step right out onto the complex’s south facing deck which is occupied by a large hot tub. The hot tub deck overlooks a lovely outdoor landscaped garden that has charcoal grill and a large picnic table. The garden is enclosed with a fence, so it’s perfect if you have little kids running around. Clark’s Market is a 1 minute walk from the door of the Boomerang Lodge, and Chair 7 is just a few minute’s walk at the end of S. Tomboy Drive.
The Telluride Lodge is one of Telluride’s original condo complexes, and it’s also the largest! The lodge is set in a park like setting on the west end of town, opposite the base of Chair 7. Three long buildings are interspersed with vast lawn areas with picnic tables & charcoal grills. The complex has an indoor & outdoor hot tub, giving guests both options, depending on the weather. On the north end of the complex is Clark’s Market & on the south end, beyond the parking lot, is Chair 7, where guests enjoy easy access to the Telluride Ski Resort. You can walk into town in about 7-8 minutes. You can also access the festival gates in the same amount of time, or you can jump on the Goose which laps around town every 10-15 minutes.
Right next door to Telluride Lodge is Lulu City. Lulu City is the western most complex in the town of Telluride, sitting on S. Mahoney Drive. The complex offers guests undercover parking (allocated spaces with a security gate), a pool (summer only), hot tub & easy ski access via Lift 7, right across the street. You can also step right onto the Telluride river trail which is right outside Lulu City. Again, the Galloping Goose shuttle bus stops right outside & will drop you anywhere in town in a matter of minutes.
Lodging In Telluride also manages a condo in the Fall Line complex. This is a more recent addition for us, and this particular location is our most centrally located property. Smack bang in the middle of town, the Fall Line condos are compact, but they offer our guests a fabulous location, attractive amenities & great value for your Telluride vacation. All of the bars, restaurants & shops of Colorado Avenue are just one block to the north. The gondola is 3 short blocks to the south west. The Fall Line has an on site hot tub & undercover parking for one vehicle.
