Telluride Film Festival
May 24 - May 27
Mountain Film is one of the longest running film festivals in all of the United States, and one of the highlights of the year in Telluride. The festival is held each year over Memorial Day Weekend, and has been running annually since 1979. As you might expect, the Mountain Film festival features some of the best independent documentary films from all around the world – but it also has a higher purpose. Each year the festival chooses a ‘critical contemporary issue’ on which to hold a symposium for one full-day out of the weekend. For example, the theme for the 2013 edition of the Mountain Film festival was ‘Climate Solutions’. There were speakers and presentations available throughout the festival that highlighted this very sensitive and important issue.
Due to the tremendous success of the festival in Telluride Mountain Film has actually expanded to become a year-round, worldwide tour that shows films in many different nations. Each year the tour lands in over 70 locations across five continents, truly demonstrating the power and importance of this unique festival.
One of the biggest draws to Mountain Film each year is the guest speakers that make an appearance and deliver a powerful talk related to the theme for that year’s festival. Some of the most notable speakers through the history of the festival include Sir Edmund Hillary, David Breashears, Carl Pope, and Lynn Hill. A trip to Telluride to attend this festival over Memorial Day weekend is sure to be one you won’t soon forget.
At the heart of the festival, however, are the films themselves. Each one has a specific purpose and importance, and you will find yourself amazed at the quality and level of professionalism that has been put into these independent films. Past films that have captured the attention of the audiences at Mountain Film include ‘Chasing Ice’, ‘Gasland’, ‘Murderball’, and ‘Grizzly Man’. The long running slogan of the festival is a simple motto that says everything you need to know about what Mountain Film stands for – “Celebrating Indomitable Spirit”.
Mountain Film has also taken its influence outside of the movie theater and into the classroom. The specially designed school program teaches kids about environmental, cultural, and social issues by letting them work hands-on to create their own films. This program is a great way for children to get involved in learning about the environment, while doing so in a manner that lets them feel engaged and excited. When you attend Mountain Film in Telluride, you are directly supporting this initiative and helping to grow the environmental outlook in the eyes of many young people.
