It’s always exciting to see a new restaurant open up in Telluride. It doesn’t happen very often! The Alpinist & The Goat – a European style wine bar & fondue restaurant has just opened it’s doors above the Elinoff Gallery on Colorado Avenue (Main Street) in Telluride. The restaurant is owned by Ryan & Krystal Smith who have created a warm, intimate dining atmosphere with well sourced produce & a great wine selection. This new offering only adds to the increasing excitement & quality of the Telluride food scene. In 2013, Condé Nast Traveler rated Telluride as one of it’s picks in it’s piece on ‘Best American Cities for Foodies’. This new establishment is a welcome addition to the Telluride restaurant community which continues to go from strength to strength.

New fondue restaurant open for night and evening crowd

Enjoying a night out in Telluride can take many forms, and now a new option offers fondue, wines and more in a great atmosphere.The Alpinist and the Goat is a wine bar and fondue restaurant open for evenings and nights with a wide variety of wine, fondue, desserts and even filets. Since early August, patrons have been able to escape the busy streets of Telluride for the small but intimate atmosphere right in the middle of town. The restaurant is located on the second floor of the building at 204 W. Colorado Ave. Hours are 4 p.m. until 2 a.m. with food service between 5:30 p.m. and 12 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday.The idea to offer fondue and wine was done in part because the restaurant’s space is small, but also as an effort to offer the best service possible.“We’ve tried to have a quaint, hospitable atmosphere, and tried to provide the best drinks and the best food, all with the best quality and the best service,” said general manager and part owner Krystal Smith. “We really want people to walk out feeling sophisticated and happy.”Ryan Smith, who is Krystal Smith’s husband and also a part owner of the Alpinist said the philosophy behind the restaurant is to offer a true, un-rushed dining experience. With its location above the Elinoff Gallery, the space includes a bar in addition to seating at tables and a view of main street. Neal Elinoff helped finance the restaurant, in part, as a creative way to fill the small space above the gallery.
The fondue selection includes traditional, aged European cheeses as well as sheep’s milk cheese: Emmenthaler and Manchego. There is also Cortina d’Ampezzo, Mont Blanc and Cajun Fondeaux and fondue is served with salad, bread and apples for dipping. There is a dessert fondue bar with chocolate fondue and dippers, including bananas, strawberries, biscotti, brownies, European cookies and other sweets.
In addition to fondue, there are grilled seasonal vegetables and a 6 oz filet mignon. Prices range from $19 to $22.
“We source our cheeses from Europe, so we’re really trying to get as good ingredients as we can.” Ryan Smith said. “We want to have a nice atmosphere up here. We don’t want people to feel rushed and we want people to come in and actually have a dining experience. We’re hoping they’ll take some of our wines and pair it up with the fondue. We want to offer something that Telluride hasn’t had with a later night food crowd.”
The wine selection is diverse with red wines like Pinot Noir, Chateau Haut-Brion and Vino Salido, in addition to other white and sparkling wines.
Wine by the glass starts at $8, and there is Cara Mia Prosecco, McMannis Chardonnay and McMannis Cabernet. Drinks also include hot offerings like espressos and after-dinner liqueurs, mixed drinks and cognacs.
“You can come here for fondue, but also wine and just have a mixed drink and filet if you wanted,” Ryan Smith said. “This is actually one of the only options to have food late at night. You could come here at 11 p.m. and have a filet.”
