Summer is here!! Hallelujah. This past winter started early, with heavy snowfall in October, followed by a very dry, mild winter, followed by a very wet, snowy spring. Honestly, it felt like winter was never ending. For ski lovers, it was an emotional roller coaster of a season. It started on such a high, then fell into a lull, then ramped up again, just as everyone was ready to move on to warm weather fun.

It’s now late June and we are well and truly into the swing of summery things. The Bluegrass festival is behind us, and we are about to hit the 4th Of July festivities – one of my favorite times of year in Telluride. It’s already been noticeably busy in town, more so than previous years (I feel like I say that every summer and it’s true! Every year the Telluride Visitors Center reports more & more summer visitors to Telluride).

I wanted to shine a spotlight on all of the happenings at Telluride Town Park during the summertime. There is so much to do in the park, that it would be a shame if you missed out on experiencing this little slice of Telluride during your visit.

A new swimming pool for the Telluride Town Park!

There are a few exciting developments in town this summer. The most exciting being the recent opening of the new pool in Telluride Town Park. This 25 meter swimming pool opened on June 15 & is located in the park, right in between the Parks & Rec office and the volleyball courts, and hosts swimming lessons daily, as well as adult lap swim time. Entry for adults is $5, seniors (59+) & kids (4-11) are $2.50, and kids under 3 are FREE! Seasonal memberships are also available. For full details, including opening hours, click here.

Entertain the kids at the imagination station…

Just beyond the new swimming facility is the awesome imagination station playground. This expansive kid’s area resembles a large ship, and includes swings, slides, bridges & hideouts. Perfect for kids of all ages, you will easily kill an hour or two at the imagination station. Surrounded by dizzying snow capped peaks, Aspen groves and waterfalls in the distance, it’s also not a bad place to kick back on a park bench and wonder if there is a more beautiful spot in earth! For smaller kids there is a toddler playground located closer to town, next to the trout pond.

Learn some sweet new tricks at the Skate Park.

Open everyday, the Telluride Skate Park is also located in town park and is a great spot for more daring kids to test out new skate and bike tricks. If your child is really into the skating scene in a big way, enroll them in the Telluride Skate Camp, run by Telluride local skate enthusiast and father, Craig Wasserman. Don’t forget to pack your helmet!

Something fishy? Try your luck at the kid’s fishing pond.

If fishing is a favorite family past time, throw a line in at the kid’s fishing pond. There is a four trout limit an fishing rods may be checked out for no charge at the Information Center in Town Park. Children must be 12 or under to fish in the pond.

Burn some energy on the tennis, volleyball or basketball courts.

If you love balls sports, there is plenty on offer at Town Park. There are two tennis courts that were resurfaced with a cushioned “Premier Court” in 2009. They are located near the swimming pool & volleyball courts. There is an outdoor basketball court located in the center of Town Park. There are no leagues scheduled. You can check out a basketball at the Parks and Recreation Office in Town Park. Two outdoor, sand volleyball courts are located in Town Park near the tennis courts. Open play and pick-up games occur throughout the summer. The best time to find other players on the court is on weekday evenings around 6:00 pm.

You can check out equipment from the Parks & Rec office to use in the park during the summer time including basketballs, fishing rods, footballs, frisbees, soccer balls, softballs, tennis racquets and balls and volleyballs. You will need to present a valid driver’s license as collateral until the item is returned.

In addition to all of these activities, there is always something going on in the park during the summer, especially in the late afternoon. There is a very competitive, local softball and baseball tournament, as well as nightly soccer games and friendly beac volleyball matches that you can watch for entertainment.
