Also worth knowing: the resort runs November 26, 2026 through April 4, 2027, and the Telluride Limited Season Pass has blackout dates covering December 26 through 31 and January 1 through 2. If you are buying passes for this trip, you need the Unlimited or a day ticket.
The Fireworks: 6:30 p.m., and Yes, That Early
This is the part that surprises first-timers. Telluride does not wait until midnight to set things on fire.
Fireworks launch from the Lift 4 area at 6:30 p.m. and are best viewed from the Mountain Village Center, around Heritage Plaza near the base of Lift 4. They are genuinely spectacular: a full display bursting between 13,000 foot peaks with the whole village lit up below.
Important logistical detail: the fireworks are only properly visible from the Mountain Village side. You can catch glimpses from town, but if you want the real show, get on the gondola and go up.
Practical advice from people who have done this many times:
- Arrive by 6:00 p.m. to get a spot. The gondola queues get long right before showtime.
- Layer up seriously. You are standing still outdoors at 9,500 feet in late December. Hand warmers are not overkill.
- Get there early and make an evening of it. Live local music typically runs in Heritage Plaza through the afternoon, so you can eat, drink, and listen rather than just standing around waiting.
The Torchlight Parade: Telluride's Most Beautiful Tradition
The torchlight parade is the thing people remember for years afterward.
At around 6:30 p.m., after a loud bang echoing off the canyon walls (a nod to the town's dynamite-blasting mining past), you look up to the top of the mountain and see a line of red lights begin to move. Telluride Ski and Snowboard School instructors and patrollers ski down the frontside carrying blazing torches, tracing a glowing serpentine line down the dark mountain. It is visible from essentially anywhere in downtown Telluride and from Mountain Village.
An honest note: the parade is weather and operations dependent, and it did not run in the most recent year even though the fireworks went ahead. Treat it as a wonderful possibility rather than a guarantee, and check the resort's event page closer to your trip. The fireworks are the reliable centerpiece.
Bonus tradition: Telluride typically runs a torchlight parade on Christmas Eve, December 24, as well. If you are here for the full holiday stretch, be outside around 6:25 p.m. that night too.
Midnight on Colorado Avenue
Here is what makes Telluride's New Year's different from a resort town that just books a DJ.
At midnight, the place to be is Colorado Avenue in front of the historic San Miguel County Courthouse. The street fills up, locals and visitors mix, and the countdown happens outdoors in the middle of a National Historic Landmark District under an absurd number of stars.
It is free, it is unpretentious, and it is the moment that converts people into annual returners.
The Gondola Runs Late on New Year's Eve
This is the single most useful thing in this entire guide.
The free gondola normally runs 6:30 a.m. to midnight. On New Year's Eve it has historically stayed open until 2:00 a.m., specifically so people can move between Mountain Village and Telluride for the celebrations without driving.
What that unlocks:
- Ride up to Mountain Village in the afternoon for music in Heritage Plaza.
- Watch the fireworks and torchlight at 6:30 from the Village side.
- Ride back down to town for dinner.
- Count down at midnight on Colorado Avenue.
- Ride back up whenever you are ready. No car, no designated driver, no cost.
Confirm the extended hours closer to the date, but plan around it. It is the best New Year's transportation setup in any Colorado ski town.

The 6:30 p.m. fireworks mean children get the entire main event before bedtime. No negotiating, no nine year old melting down at 11:45. They see the torches, they see the fireworks, they have a real memory, and they are asleep by nine while the adults figure out the rest.
Fill the rest of the day with:
- Sledding and ice skating at Telluride Town Park. The Nordic Center rents sleds and skates for a few dollars.

Both work. They give you different nights.
Stay in downtown Telluride if you want to walk to dinner, be on Colorado Avenue at midnight without thinking about it, and wander between bars afterward. You will ride the gondola up for fireworks and back down after. This is the classic Telluride New Year's.
Stay in Mountain Village if you want to walk out your door to the fireworks, have easy ski access on the 30th and 1st, and prefer a quieter base with bigger views. You will ride the gondola down for midnight and back up whenever you like.
